140 candles, Roman stories and Halloween crafts: Grosvenor Museum’s birthday plans
Chester’s Grosvenor Museum is celebrating 140 years with a half-term programme that mixes history, making and a Victorian birthday party.

A 140th birthday deserves more than a slice of cake. Chester’s Grosvenor Museum is marking its milestone with activities that give families a reason to put history into the half-term diary.
The council’s programme includes birthday-themed Meet & Make on Monday 26 October and free Halloween crafts on Tuesday 27 and Wednesday 28 October. On Thursday 29 October, a Victorian Birthday Party takes place in the Roman Chester Gallery from 10.30am to 3.30pm.
Museum Highlights Tours are scheduled at 11am from Tuesday 27 to Friday 30 October. The new Hub, created from the former museum shop, provides space for creative sessions and community groups. The celebrations also include an archaeological conference, Café Crafts and an evening screening of The Red Shoes.
Pick the activity that suits your group, rather than trying to squeeze in everything. Check the museum’s own information for admission, booking requirements and any programme changes before travelling. A small outing can be a surprisingly good prompt for a bigger conversation about the city’s past.
